Looking After Papatuanuku

Looking After Papatuanuku

Last Wednesday Pukeko and Nga Ringa Awhina took the opportunity to do our bit in taking care of Papatuanuku (the land) by arming ourselves with plastic bags and picking up the roadside rubbish between Mangonui School and the Waterfront via Tasman Street. The children from Nga Ringa took on the responsibility as Tuakana (older) by buddying up with the Teina (younger) from Pukeko. We discovered a stranded fish still hooked on a fishing line and tangled around a pole. Vicky was quickly to the rescue by getting into the water and releasing the fish. We were all rewarded for our efforts with an ice block.

Please watch a sort slide show of the photos taken from our outing

Whanau Day - Reading Focus - Friday 27th March 2015

Whanau Day Reading

Each term Mangonui School invites whanau in to learn about what we are doing in our classrooms. A big thank you to all of the families who joined us during Term One for our Whanau Reading Day. As a follow up to the Whanau Day I would like everyone to have the opportunity to learn about what we are doing in Nga Ringa Awhina. Below are some helpful hints for parents when hearing children read at home.

How Can I Help My Child With Their Reading?
  • Discuss the front cover.
  • Predict - what could it be about?
  • Relate the events to personal experiences wherever possible.
  • Look closely at the pictures - facial expressions, unfamiliar objects.
  • Match their finger to the words as they read them. It doesn't matter if they are reading from memory or just know the pattern.
  • Ask your child to point out the letter sounds...sssss.....ttttt and later basic words such as I, am, went, etc.
  • Ask them questions at the end - can they tell you what happened?
  • Give them lots of praise and encouragement.

You can also try reading to them or read a page each. Make it as fun as possible. Praise all attempts that your child makes.
