ANZAC DAY

Walking to the War Memorial
Thursday 23rd March

On Thursday we all walked down to the War Memorial. The children in Kotuku had made crosses for all the people who had died after serving for NZ in different wars.

There were lots of people at the war memorial. We remember the people who died in the wars. - Ava

The war memorial was fun and we heard a lot of things and we got to stay by the Kotuku children  - Tangikina

I looked at the people that died. I had lunch and we went down to the war memorial and the big kids went with us. - Summer

Whanau Day - Reading Focus - Friday 27th March 2015

Whanau Day Reading

Each term Mangonui School invites whanau in to learn about what we are doing in our classrooms. A big thank you to all of the families who joined us during Term One for our Whanau Reading Day. As a follow up to the Whanau Day I would like everyone to have the opportunity to learn about what we are doing in Nga Ringa Awhina. Below are some helpful hints for parents when hearing children read at home.

How Can I Help My Child With Their Reading?
  • Discuss the front cover.
  • Predict - what could it be about?
  • Relate the events to personal experiences wherever possible.
  • Look closely at the pictures - facial expressions, unfamiliar objects.
  • Match their finger to the words as they read them. It doesn't matter if they are reading from memory or just know the pattern.
  • Ask your child to point out the letter sounds...sssss.....ttttt and later basic words such as I, am, went, etc.
  • Ask them questions at the end - can they tell you what happened?
  • Give them lots of praise and encouragement.

You can also try reading to them or read a page each. Make it as fun as possible. Praise all attempts that your child makes.

Duffy Hero Assembly - James Jennings - Friday 27th March 2015

31st March 2015

Dear Duffy and James

Thank you for the books. We love reading. Reading is fun.

Thank you James Jennings for coming to visit us. You are great fun. You made us have heaps of fun. You made us all happy. You were silly and you made us laugh. We played your games altogether. We liked it how you ran with you arm out and made us put our hands up. We also played Simon Says. We think that James is really funny.

Thank you so much for our new books.

Love
Nga Ringa Awhina
